
Stavros Avgoustides
Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus in Athens
Stavros Avgoustides was appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to the Hellenic Republic on October 2, 2023.
Additionally, on May 14, 2024, Mr. Avgoustides presented his credentials as Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to the Republic of Albania, with residence in Athens, and since March 6, 2025, he has also been accredited as Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to the Republic of Georgia, again with residence in Athens.
He was born in Nicosia in 1972 and is the son of the retired Lieutenant General Loukis Avgoustidis. He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus in 1998 and has since served in various diplomatic missions abroad as well as at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, representing his country at both bilateral and multilateral levels.
During his diplomatic career abroad, he served as Ambassador in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (2019–2023), Ambassador in Sofia, Bulgaria (2014–2018), General Consul in Toronto, Canada (2009–2011), Chargé d’Affaires a.i. in Sofia, Bulgaria (2006–2009), Consul in Athens, Greece (2002–2006) and Deputy Head of Mission / Consul in Damascus, Syria (1999–2002).
At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nicosia, he served in both the Protocol and Consular Affairs Divisions (1998-1999 and 2001-2014), in the EU Affairs Division (2001-2002) and as Head of the Middle East Department in the Middle East and Africa Division (2018-2019).
During Cyprus’ Presidency of the European Council (2012), he successfully chaired the European Council’s Working Group on Counsular Affairs (COCON).
In July 2018, Mr. Avgoustides was bestowed by H.E. the President of the Republic of Bulgaria Rumen Radev with the Order of the Madara Horseman – First Class, for his significant contribution to the establishment, strengthening and development of bilateral relations between Cyprus and Bulgaria, as well as for his efforts and support in raising awareness and funds for local and international charity organizations assisting children in Bulgaria.
In September 2018, the Mayor of Sofia, Yordanka Fandakova, awarded him the “Coat of Arms of the City of Sofia” for his contribution to strengthening bilateral cultural relations, his involvement in the cultural life of the Bulgarian capital, and for promoting culture and creativity.
Mr. Avgoustidis is holder of an MBA from the University of Reading, UK (Henley Business School), a MA in International Relations and European Studies from the University of Kent, UK (London Center of International Relations), and a BA in Political Science and Economics from Arizona State University, USA.
